Venice, built from the 5th century onward on an archipelago of one hundred and eighteen marshy islets to escape barbarian invasions, became between the 10th and 18th centuries the capital of a maritime republic, nicknamed the Serene Republic, that controlled a large share of trade between Europe and the East. Its Gothic and Renaissance palaces, built on wooden piles driven into the lagoon, and St Mark's Square, the city's historic heart, rank among Europe's best-preserved architectural ensembles.
The Dolomites, UNESCO-listed in 2009, owe their name to the dolomite mineral that makes up their limestone peaks, formed over two hundred and fifty million years ago at the bottom of a tropical ocean before being uplifted by plate tectonics. This massif offers every evening the enrosadira phenomenon, a pink-then-orange blaze on the rock faces at sunset caused by light reflecting off dolomite crystals, a spectacle that draws photographers and hikers from around the world.
