Interlaken, whose name literally means "between the lakes" in reference to its position between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, both turquoise-hued glacial lakes, serves as the gateway to the Jungfrau region, where a rack railway completed in 1912 after sixteen years of construction climbs to the highest railway station in Europe, over three thousand four hundred metres up, offering direct access to the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps and UNESCO-listed.
The Jungfraujoch, nicknamed the "roof of Europe," has held since 1912 the continent's highest railway station at over three thousand four hundred metres, completed after sixteen years of tunnelling through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch summits. This titanic project, carried out without modern mechanical means, now offers direct access to the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps at twenty-three kilometres long, listed as UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
Interlaken owes its name and strategic position to its location between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, two glacial bodies of water whose distinctive turquoise colour comes from fine rock particles ground by the surrounding glaciers, suspended in the water and called rock flour. This central position historically made the town a commercial crossroads as early as the Middle Ages, before becoming in the 19th century one of the first destinations of the nascent alpine tourism industry, popularised in particular by the travel writings of numerous European Romantic writers.
