The Dead Sea, actually a landlocked salt lake sitting over four hundred metres below sea level, holds a salt concentration nearly ten times that of the oceans, which makes floating involuntary and drowning almost impossible. The mineral-rich mud, harvested from its shores and high in magnesium and potassium, has been used since antiquity for its dermatological properties, still touted today by the spas lining the coast.
The Dana Biosphere Reserve, created in 1989, spans over three hundred square kilometres and crosses four distinct climatic zones, from high-altitude Mediterranean forest to the arid Wadi Araba desert, sheltering over eight hundred plant species and several hundred animal species including the Nubian ibex. The village of Dana, with its restored Ottoman stone houses, serves as a starting point for hikes that gradually descend toward the desert, offering one of Jordan's most spectacular landscape transitions.
