A journey between Saint-Denis, the Creole capital, Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and the UNESCO-listed cirques of Mafate and Salazie, ringed by dizzying ramparts.
One of the most active volcanoes on the planet, erupting on average every eight months, Piton de la Fournaise offers a landscape in constant transformation, where the most recent lava flows sit alongside pioneer vegetation gradually recolonising the black rock. The Enclos Fouqué, a vast caldera where most eruptions occur, is crossed on foot over several hours, under the constant watch of volcanologists.
The wildest of the island's three cirques, UNESCO World Heritage-listed together with the whole of Réunion's Pitons, cirques and ramparts, Mafate has no road access at all. Its hamlets, isolated settlements founded by escaped slaves in the 18th century, are still resupplied by helicopter or mule, offering hikers one of the most authentic trekking experiences in the Indian Ocean.
