Silhouette Island, the third largest in the Seychelles, is over ninety percent protected as a national park, making it one of the best-preserved islands in the Indian Ocean. Its granite peaks covered in primary rainforest, still largely scientifically unexplored until the 1990s, shelter endemic species found nowhere else, while successfully reintroduced Aldabra giant tortoises roam freely across the island.
Silhouette's hiking trails cross primary rainforest ranked among the best-preserved in the Indian Ocean, home to endemic plant and animal species still poorly documented. The climb up Mont Dauban, the island's highest point, offers a three-hundred-sixty-degree view over the surrounding archipelago, the reward for a demanding hike through dense vegetation.
A population of Aldabra giant tortoises, reintroduced to the island decades ago, roams freely across Silhouette, offering unexpected encounters along the trails. The island's marine research centre, active since 2001, runs coral restoration programmes that visitors can learn about during occasional information sessions.
