Kathmandu Valley holds seven UNESCO-listed sites within a relatively small area, testament to over a thousand years of exchange between Buddhism and Hinduism. Boudhanath, one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas, and Swayambhunath, perched on its hilltop and home to monkeys considered sacred, sum up on their own the spiritual density of a city where the sacred blends seamlessly into daily life.
From the shores of Phewa Lake, the Annapurna range seems within reach — a wall of snow-capped peaks rising above eight thousand metres, visible with no effort and no trekking permit required. The Sarangkot viewpoint, a roughly thirty-minute drive away, offers one of Asia's most spectacular sunrises over the Annapurna and Machapuchare, a peak never officially climbed out of respect for its sacred status.
