Namche Bazaar, an amphitheatre-shaped village nestled over three thousand four hundred metres up, serves as the unofficial capital of the Sherpa people and the last resupply point before the Himalayan peaks. Without requiring the full trek to Everest Base Camp, which generally takes two weeks, a few days' walk from Lukla already reaches this altitude and, on a clear day, offers a view of Everest's summit itself from an accessible viewpoint.
The flight to Lukla, whose sloped airstrip perched on a mountainside ranks among the world's most dramatic, marks the start of the walk through the Khumbu Valley. The trail follows the Dudh Kosi River, crosses several vertiginous suspension bridges, and regularly passes caravans of yaks carrying supplies to the high-altitude villages, the only means of transporting goods in a region with no roads for vehicles.
Namche Bazaar, built as an amphitheatre against the hillside, concentrates trekking gear shops, cybercafés, and guesthouses that make it the true nerve centre of the Khumbu. A day excursion to Tengboche Monastery, over three thousand eight hundred metres up, offers one of the most complete views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam, three of the region's highest peaks united in a single panorama.
