When to go to Madagascar: dry season & whales

In short

The best time to visit Madagascar is generally May to October, during the dry season. Humpback whales are mostly seen from July to September, and the north coast keeps its own calendar: Nosy Be is best in April–May and from October to December.

What is the best season to visit Madagascar?

Madagascar is an island-continent: the climate shifts with the coast and the altitude, but two main seasons shape the year. The cool, dry season generally runs from April to October; the hot, rainy season stretches from November to March. The dry season is when roads are most passable, parks are accessible and lemurs are easiest to spot.

From January to March, tropical cyclones can hit the island, especially the east and north coasts, so we advise against those months for a first trip. July and August are the busiest, so it pays to book early.

Our experts' tip

Madagascar is huge and distances are long: rather than trying to see everything at once, choose one or two regions and give yourself time. Tell us your dates and we will adapt the itinerary to the season.

When should you go to see lemurs and baobabs?

For lemurs and baobabs, the dry season is the most comfortable. Our trip Antananarivo to the Avenue of the Baobabs is recommended from April to November: it combines the Andasibe forest, where indri calls echo at dawn, with the eight-hundred-year-old baobabs, stunning at sunset.

In the south, the Isalo and the South journey runs from April to October. The sandstone canyons of Isalo are far more pleasant to walk in dry weather, and the Anja community reserve lets you get within a few metres of ring-tailed lemurs.

When to go to Nosy Be and for whale watching?

The north-west coast follows its own rhythm. For Nosy Be and the Northern Islands, the best windows are April–May and October to December. From October to December, dedicated outings let you swim alongside whale sharks passing through these plankton-rich waters.

As for whales, humpbacks generally visit Sainte-Marie island on the east coast from July to September. Keep that in mind if you want to pair a lemur journey with whale watching: it fits the end of the dry season.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to go to Madagascar?

For a first trip, May to October is generally the safest: dry weather, passable roads and good wildlife viewing. September and October are often a good compromise, a little quieter than July–August.

Can you travel to Madagascar in the rainy season?

It is possible, but we advise against January to March because of cyclone risk and roads that can be cut. November and December remain an option, notably for Nosy Be.

How long should you plan for?

Our journeys last 6 to 7 nights per region. Combining the centre, the south and the north coast takes more time; we build the itinerary with you.
