Separated from the African continent for over 80 million years, Madagascar has developed almost entirely unique flora and fauna — 90% of its animal and plant species exist nowhere else on Earth. The indri, the largest living lemur, is its most striking embodiment: a song that resembles a distant siren, carrying for several kilometres through the Andasibe canopy, audible from the first light of dawn.
These Adansonia grandidieri baobabs, now classified as an endangered species, are the remnants of a dense forest that once covered the whole region before being cleared for agriculture. What remains is a row of around twenty trees, some over eight hundred years old, standing along a dirt track — a landscape that, despite its extreme simplicity, has become one of the most recognisable images on the entire African continent.
