The arid south of Madagascar, a world away from the rainforests of the centre: the sandstone canyons of Isalo National Park, carved by millions of years of erosion, and the Anja Community Reserve, where entire troops of ring-tailed lemurs live freely among the rocks.
Isalo National Park unfolds an unexpected landscape for Madagascar: deep canyons, turquoise natural pools, and rock formations eroded into improbable shapes. A hike leads to the Black Pool and the Blue Pool, two spring-fed natural basins where a swim is well earned after hours of walking under the sun.
The Anja Community Reserve, run entirely by the neighbouring village, protects several hundred ring-tailed lemurs within a granite amphitheatre. Used to a respectful human presence, the lemurs allow visitors to approach within a few metres, offering close observation rarely possible elsewhere on the island. Tourism revenue directly funds the village's school and health clinic.
