When to Go to the Maldives: Monsoons and Best Months

In short

The best time to visit the Maldives is generally December to April, during the dry northeast monsoon: clear skies, calm seas and glassy lagoons. From May to November the wet season is more changeable but still beautiful, especially for the manta rays of Baa Atoll.

What is the best month to visit the Maldives?

The archipelago lives by two monsoons. From December to April the northeast monsoon generally brings dry weather, plenty of sun and calmer seas: this is high season, the one of turquoise-lagoon photos. January, February and March are usually the most settled months.

From May to November the southwest monsoon brings more cloud, wind and showers, often short ones. Temperatures stay warm all year, around 30 °C by day, and sunny spells never disappear: you simply accept more uncertainty. April and November are transition months, when the weather can turn from one day to the next.

Here is our month-by-month reading, to be nuanced by atoll: the north, centre and south of the archipelago do not get exactly the same weather at the same time.

When can you see manta rays and whale sharks?

It is often the wet season that appeals to snorkelling fans. Hanifaru Bay, in UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll, generally gathers manta rays feeding on plankton from roughly May to November. Access is strictly regulated to protect the animals.

Our trip “Local Islands and Baa Atoll” pairs this experience with Maafushi, an inhabited local island. For diving, the cruise “A Liveaboard Diving Cruise” explores several atolls in a week; whale sharks are present year-round in certain areas, such as South Ari Atoll.

Our experts' tip

If manta rays matter more than guaranteed sunshine, travel from May to November and keep some flexibility in the plan: weather and plankton decide the best outing.

Should you choose a resort island or a local island?

Your style of stay matters as much as the month. In an overwater villa everything happens in a single lagoon: it is the disconnect-and-unwind stay, which we recommend mostly between December and April. Our trip “Overwater, Unplugged” offers five nights with no schedule but the one you choose.

Local islands show another side of the country: family guesthouses, village life and a public beach where you swim in a swimsuit, in a mostly Muslim country. For a honeymoon, our honeymoons page and our article on honeymoon destinations by month will help you compare destinations by month.

Good to know

The Maldives is an archipelago of coral atolls, so transfers are by seaplane, boat or domestic flight. Transfer times shape your arrival day, and we build them into the programme.
