A liveaboard cruise allows exploration of several Maldivian atolls in a single week, where a resort stay limits exploration to a single lagoon. The channels between atolls, called kandus, concentrate nutrient-rich currents that attract whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of grey reef sharks, at dive sites often inaccessible from land.
The kandus, natural channels separating the atolls, concentrate exceptional marine life thanks to the currents that flow through them continuously. The drift dives practised there allow sightings, depending on the season, of schools of hundreds of grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and sometimes hammerhead sharks off the deeper zones.
Baa Atoll, a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve, and the south of Ari Atoll rank among the best places in the world to swim alongside manta rays that come to feed at natural cleaning stations, as well as whale sharks present year-round in certain areas, a rarity for a species that is generally migratory.
