When to go to Australia: Outback, Reef and Tasmania

In short

For a first trip, May to September is generally the best all-round window: Uluru is bearable, tropical Queensland is dry and Sydney stays pleasant. But Australia is a continent: Tasmania is best from December to March, and the seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.

What are the best months to visit Australia?

First rule: the seasons are reversed. Austral summer runs from December to February and winter from June to August. Second, the weather varies hugely from one end of the country to the other. The calendar below applies to a route combining Sydney and Uluru with northern Queensland; Tasmania follows its own logic, explained further down.

From June to September everything lines up: in the centre of the country, the Northern Territory has mild days, and the dry season settles around Cairns. May and October are good compromises, with a little more heat or variability depending on the region. From November to February the Outback gets very hot and the north enters its wet season: it is possible, but the programme needs adapting. To compare with your wishes, our month-by-month trip finder can help.

Which region should you choose by season?

Rather than hunting for one perfect month for the whole country, start from what you want to see. Here are our reference points, to be confirmed when we build your trip.

RegionRecommended periodGood to know
SydneyMarch to May, September to NovemberPleasant almost all year, hot summers
Uluru and the OutbackMay to SeptemberVery hot in summer, walk early in the morning
Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, DaintreeJune to OctoberStinger season from November to May
TasmaniaDecember to MarchChangeable weather, pack layers

For the Red Centre, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta park authorities say May to September is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs usually between 20 and 30°C. In summer temperatures often exceed 35°C, so people walk early with plenty of water. That is why our Sydney to Uluru trip is offered from April to October.

On the northern coast, the dry season, generally June to October, gives the best conditions for the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest. Tasmania is cooler than the mainland: from December to March, walks around Cradle Mountain and Wineglass Bay are at their best.

Our experts’ tip

If your dates are fixed in December or January, do not give up on Australia: focus on Tasmania and Sydney, and keep the Outback and tropical north for another trip. We build the itinerary around your calendar, not the other way round.

Should you worry about heat and stingers?

Two points are worth knowing before you book. First, the summer heat of the Outback, which limits midday activities. Second, marine stingers: according to the Queensland government the risk exists all year in tropical waters but is higher from November to May. Reef trips are possible in every season; in peak stinger season a protective suit is generally recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to go to Australia?

There is no single month for the whole country. To combine Sydney, Uluru and the tropical north, May to September is generally the best balance; for Tasmania, aim for December to March.

Can you go to Australia in December or January?

Yes, it is austral summer. It is very hot in the Outback and wet in the north, but it is the right season for Tasmania and for Sydney and its beaches.

How long should you allow?

Our itineraries last 5 to 7 nights per region. Many travellers combine two or three; tell us your length of stay and we adapt the programme.
