The Great Barrier Reef, stretching over two thousand three hundred kilometres along the Queensland coast, remains the only living structure visible from space and shelters over four hundred coral species along with thousands of fish species. From Cairns, fast boat excursions reach preserved outer reefs in under an hour, where diving and snorkelling reveal coral biodiversity among the richest in the world, despite the threats posed by climate change.
The Daintree Rainforest, estimated at over one hundred and eighty million years old, survived uninterrupted through the ice ages that destroyed most of the planet's other rainforests, making it a unique genetic sanctuary home to plant and animal species predating the appearance of dinosaurs. The meeting point between the forest and the Great Barrier Reef, where the canopy almost touches the coral reef at Cape Tribulation, is one of the rare places on Earth where two UNESCO-listed ecosystems coexist on the same territory.
