When to Go to New Zealand: North and South Island

In short

The best time to visit New Zealand is generally the southern summer, from December to March, with November and April as shoulder months. The country is large and changeable, so the right month depends mostly on which island you visit and what you want to do.

When is the best time to go to New Zealand?

The seasons are reversed compared with Europe: summer runs from December to February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August and spring from September to November. Days are long in midsummer, which leaves plenty of time for hikes, boat trips and mountain drives. It is also the busiest season, so it pays to book early.

November and April are often excellent compromises: the scenery is superb and there are generally fewer visitors, though the weather is less predictable. New Zealand's climate can change quickly, even in summer, so always pack layers and a waterproof jacket.

Our experts' tip

In the Southern Alps and Fiordland, rain can fall at any time of year. It also feeds the waterfalls of Milford Sound, so leave a spare day in your itinerary rather than timing everything to the hour.

North Island or South Island: which to choose?

The North Island is milder and easier to combine on a short trip. It brings together the geothermal areas of Rotorua, Māori culture and the Bay of Islands. The South Island is wilder and more dramatic, with lakes, glaciers, fjords and coastal trails. It involves more driving, and therefore more time.

When should you take a South Island road trip?

For a route linking Queenstown, Wanaka, Mount Cook and Milford Sound, the southern summer is the simplest: open roads, long days and outdoor activities within reach. Our Queenstown to Fiordland: Road Trip at the Edge of the World runs from November to March. It combines bungee jumping or jet boating for thrill-seekers, a Milford Sound cruise, the Roy's Peak climb and a walk to Franz Josef Glacier.

At the top of the South Island, Abel Tasman and the Marlborough Sounds is explored from December to March in our programme. Abel Tasman is the country's smallest national park and one of its sunniest; its golden beaches are best seen by sea kayak.

Good to know

The southern winter mainly suits skiers and snowy landscapes. Some water activities and trails are harder to reach then, so check conditions before committing.

And for the North Island, which month?

Rotorua can generally be visited year-round thanks to its geothermal sites, but our Rotorua and the Bay of Islands trip is designed for November to April. You discover geysers, bubbling mud pools, a hangi meal and Māori dance, before heading north.

There is no single month, but January, February and March are generally the most pleasant for long days and outdoor activities.

Can you go to New Zealand in November or April?

Yes. They are good shoulder seasons, often quieter, with more variable weather. Several of our trips are offered in November or April.

How long should you plan for?

Our programmes last 5 to 7 nights per region. Combining both islands takes considerably longer, and we build the route with you.
