Ideal length
A road trip through the South Island, from Queenstown, the adventure capital, to Fiordland's vertiginous fjords, via the lakes of Wanaka and the west coast glaciers.
The trip begins on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, in a town that has made adrenaline its specialty — bungee jumping, jet boating, or a simple gondola to the top of Bob's Peak for those who prefer the view to the vertigo. Milford Sound, reached by a road through Fiordland National Park, closes this first chapter with a cruise between cliffs and waterfalls plunging straight into the water.
The road to Wanaka, via Glenorchy and its landscapes made famous by Lord of the Rings, opens a second, more contemplative chapter. The Roy's Peak climb, Mount Cook's glacial lake and its miniature icebergs, then the walk to the Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast close the trip at the full scale of the Southern Alps — peaks, ice and an almost total silence.
