The town also remains one of the country's main centres of Māori culture, where traditional hongi greetings, wood carving, and haka ceremonies are still passed down through generations.
Rotorua sits atop the caldera of a supervolcano dormant for over two hundred thousand years, whose residual activity continues to fuel geysers, fumaroles, and bubbling mud lakes visible in several geothermal valleys developed for visitors. The Pohutu geyser, the largest in the southern hemisphere, regularly shoots water over thirty metres high, while the town's characteristic sulphur smell, earning it the nickname "Rotten-rua" from early settlers, permeates the atmosphere permanently.
Rotorua concentrates one of New Zealand's highest proportions of Māori population, a direct legacy of the Te Arawa tribe who settled there several centuries ago, harnessing geothermal heat for cooking and warmth. The region's cultural villages offer hangi meals, traditionally cooked in earth ovens heated by volcanic stones, as well as performances of haka and poi, ritual dances that continue to pass down the oral history of the Māori people to new generations.
