In short
Choose Rwanda for a short, simple and comfortable trip; choose Uganda for a wilder forest and a richer primate itinerary. Meeting a mountain gorilla family is exceptional in both countries: the real differences are budget, logistics and the rest of the journey.
- RwandaVirunga volcanoes, quick access from Kigali
- UgandaBwindi Impenetrable Forest, chimpanzees in Kibale
- Best timeJune to September, then December to February
- Suggested length5 to 6 nights on the ground
Mountain gorillas live only in the high-altitude forests of the Virunga massif (Rwanda, Uganda, DRC) and in Bwindi, Uganda. Visits are tightly managed: small groups, rangers who follow each family daily, and an observation time of about one hour. Children under 15 are generally not admitted.
Having selected trips in both countries, our view is simple: there is no wrong choice, only the one that suits how you like to travel.
When is the best time to see gorillas?
Seasons are similar in Rwanda and Uganda. The driest months, generally June to September and December to February, make trails less muddy and treks more comfortable. You can travel in the rainy season, but expect slipperier walks.

This is a general guide: conditions vary from year to year, and a trek can last from thirty minutes to several hours depending on where the family is. Here is the comparison we use most when advising travellers.
| Criteria | Rwanda | Uganda |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Bamboo forest of the Virunga volcanoes | Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, denser and wilder |
| Access | Kigali, then a road to Musanze | Longer roads and more relief to reach Bwindi |
| Other primates | Chimpanzees in Nyungwe | Chimpanzees in Kibale, thirteen primate species |
| Budget | Generally higher | Generally more accessible |
| Ideal for | A short, comfortable stay | A more adventurous trip with safaris |
Our experts' tip
If you have a week, pair the gorillas with a second highlight: the chimpanzees of Nyungwe in Rwanda or Kibale in Uganda. The pace of the trip will be all the better for it.
Rwanda: why choose this country?
Rwanda suits a first trip to Central Africa well. Kigali is one of the cleanest capitals on the continent, and the road to the volcanoes is short. Our Kigali to Volcanoes National Park trip takes 5 nights and peaks with an hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family.
To extend it, Nyungwe Forest offers chimpanzee tracking and a canopy suspension bridge forty metres up. See everything on our Rwanda page.
Good to know
Trekking permits are limited each day and must be booked well in advance, especially from June to September. We take care of this as part of your tailor-made trip.
Uganda: why choose this country?
Uganda appeals to travellers who love raw nature. In Bwindi, an ancient forest home to nearly half of the world's mountain gorillas, treks can be demanding but are often wilder and less crowded. Our Bwindi to Kibale trip adds the chimpanzees of Kibale.
If you also want a classic safari, Murchison Falls offers a Nile cruise, Rothschild's giraffes and hippos. Everything is on our Uganda page.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to be very fit to see gorillas?
You need reasonable fitness: the walk can last from thirty minutes to several hours on steep, sometimes muddy ground. Rangers adapt the group to everyone's abilities.
Can you see gorillas in a single day?
The trek itself takes a day, but allow for transfers from Kigali or Entebbe. We suggest 5 to 6 nights to enjoy the journey.
Can you combine Rwanda and Uganda?
It is possible, provided you accept a longer itinerary with border crossings. Tell us about your plans and we will assess the best option.
