Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest, is built around the falls that give it its name, the point where the entire Victoria Nile is squeezed through a rocky gorge just seven metres wide before plunging with deafening power. The surrounding park, savannah and riverine forest, is home to Rothschild's giraffe, lions, and one of East Africa's highest concentrations of hippos along the river.
A boat cruise heads up the Victoria Nile to the foot of the falls, where the entire river roars through the narrow rocky gorge — a striking contrast with the Nile's peaceful width both upstream and downstream. The trip allows sightings of Nile crocodiles, hippos, and exceptional birdlife, including the rare shoebill stork, one of Africa's most sought-after birds.
The park's northern sector, savannah dotted with shea trees and borassus palms, holds Uganda's largest population of Rothschild's giraffe, an endangered subspecies recognisable by its white legs. Lions, buffalo, and Uganda kob round out a savannah wildlife particularly dense for East Africa.
