Over twenty-five thousand years old, the impenetrable forest of Bwindi owes its name to the extreme density of its vegetation, which makes every trek physically demanding. It is home to nearly half the world's population of mountain gorillas, spread across several families tracked daily by rangers who know each individual. Unlike neighbouring Rwanda, treks in Bwindi can take several hours depending on the group's position, but often offer wilder, less crowded access.
Kibale Forest is home to thirteen different primate species, including over fifteen hundred chimpanzees spread across several communities habituated to human presence. The morning trek, generally shorter and less physically demanding than Bwindi's, offers a high chance of observing these great apes in full activity — vocalisations, group movements and complex social interactions, just metres away.
