In short
A private 4x4 trip in Morocco suits travellers who want a taste of the desert without spending two weeks on the road: you set your own pace and stops, with a French-speaking driver. We recommend it above all as a first look at the south, in 5 days from Marrakech.

Why choose a private 4x4 for the Moroccan desert?
In southern Morocco distances are long and the scenery changes with every pass. Travelling privately changes the nature of the trip: you choose the departure time, ask the driver to stop at a palm grove or a kasbah, and wait for nobody. For a couple, a family or a small group of friends, it is also a calmer way to see the country, without organising each transfer yourself.
The 4x4 has another very practical advantage: it can take tracks that coaches do not. On our circuit, the crossing of the great Lake Iriki desert to Foum Zguid is exactly that kind of stretch. And because the driver speaks French, you get explanations about landscapes, villages and local customs.
It is not for everyone: if you would rather have a guide commenting on every site in a small group, our escorted Grand South circuit will fit better. The differences are detailed below.
What does a 5-day 4x4 desert trip look like?
Our Morocco: Desert, Riad and Kasbah by Private 4x4 circuit follows a simple thread, from the red city to the dunes, then back through the kasbahs.
- Day 1: flight to Marrakech, airport welcome and check-in at a riad in the medina.
- Day 2: 4x4 to Zagora over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, then a night in a bivouac at Erg Lihoudi, dinner included.
- Day 3: crossing of the great Lake Iriki desert to Foum Zguid, then on to Ouarzazate, dinner included.
- Day 4: Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Berber Hollywood", the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and back to Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka.
- Day 5: breakfast, free time and airport transfer according to your flight.
The programme is deliberately compact: two days on the road through beautiful scenery, a night in the desert and an evening in Marrakech before your flight. The trip page shows a starting price of €1,042 "from", flights excluded, for 2 people. Departures are guaranteed.
Our experts' tip
The seasons listed on the trip page are October-November and February-April. To compare months before booking, read our guide on when to go to Morocco.
Riad, bivouac or kasbah: where do you actually sleep?
This circuit deliberately alternates moods. In Marrakech you stay in a riad: a traditional house around a courtyard, with fountains and lanterns, far from the medina's bustle once the door closes. In Ouarzazate the accommodation is a hotel. And at the heart of the trip, a night in a bivouac at Erg Lihoudi, under a sky full of stars, far from everything.
If a bivouac appeals but you are torn between several deserts, our article on the Moroccan desert: Agafay, Merzouga or Erg Chigaga helps you choose according to your time and the level of remoteness you want.
Private 4x4 or escorted circuit: which one?
It depends on your time, your wish for freedom and how deep you want to go. Here are our two southern circuits, as described on their pages.
| Criterion | Desert, riad and kasbah (private 4x4) | Grand South, kasbahs and gorges (escorted) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 5 days / 4 nights | 8 days / 7 nights |
| Format | Air-conditioned 4x4, French-speaking driver | Escorted circuit (4x4 version with 4* hotels available) |

| Marrakech | Riad in the medina, evening before the return | Two full days, one of them free |
| Ideal for | A quick, comfortable first escape | A fuller trip at a gentler pace |
