Far from the channels of the Okavango, another face of Botswana: the Kalahari Desert and the vast salt flats of Makgadikgadi, where the horizon blurs into the sky. Time spent with San communities, a walk among meerkat colonies used to human presence, and a night under the stars out on the pan, far from any light pollution.
The trip begins in the Kalahari Desert, ancestral home of the San people, one of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth. A walk guided by community members reveals survival techniques passed down for generations: finding water, medicinal plants, traditional hunting methods. A rare exchange, far from any staged tourist performance.
On to the Makgadikgadi Pans, the remains of a prehistoric lake now dried out, a white expanse stretching to the horizon. A quad-bike outing across the salt leads to meerkat colonies habituated enough to climb onto visitors' shoulders as a lookout post. At night, a light camp is set up in the heart of the desert: with no artificial light for kilometres around, the starlit sky here is among the most spectacular in southern Africa.
