A journey up the Nile, as the pharaohs travelled it before us: the pyramids of Giza and Islamic Cairo, then a slow cruise to Aswan, between temples, tombs and riverside villages.
The trip begins with the pyramids of Giza, visited right at opening to enjoy the site before the heat and crowds arrive — the last standing wonder of the ancient world, guarded by the Sphinx for over four thousand years. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar, a maze of covered lanes where spices and jewellery have been traded since the 14th century, closes this first chapter before the flight to Upper Egypt.
Luxor alone holds a third of Egypt's ancient monuments — the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple are its high points. The cruise that follows, aboard a traditional dahabieh, sails slowly up the river to Aswan, with stops at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo. The trip closes at Abu Simbel, where two colossal temples carved into the cliff by Ramesses II were moved stone by stone to escape the waters of Lake Nasser.
