A coastal, underwater side of Egypt, far from the pharaonic sites. The Egyptian Red Sea ranks among the world's best diving spots, with unusually dense coral reefs and dozens of wrecks, including the famous Thistlegorm. Between dives, the lagoon town of El Gouna, built entirely around canals, offers a gentler pace.

Hurghada, gateway to the Red Sea

The stay begins in Hurghada, the historic base for diving the Egyptian Red Sea. Day boat trips allow several sites to be explored in a single outing: Giftun Reef, known for its turtles and schools of surgeonfish, or the wreck of the Thistlegorm, a British military cargo ship sunk in 1941, now one of the most celebrated wreck dives in the world.

El Gouna, the town of canals

Next, El Gouna, an hour to the north, a town designed entirely around a network of lagoons and canals, where a water-taxi sometimes gets you between neighbourhoods faster than a car. The mood is more relaxed than in Hurghada, between the marina, spas, and private beaches, while staying close to reefs just as spectacular on the Red Sea's northern side.
