Lower Zambezi National Park, facing Zimbabwe's Mana Pools across the river, is explored above all by canoe, gliding silently past pods of hippos and elephant herds that wade right into the water to drink. A river-level safari, engine-free, through one of southern Africa's most spectacular riverine landscapes.
The canoe descent follows the current, past sandbanks where crocodiles doze and narrow channels frequented by elephants, which sometimes swim across the river right in front of the boats. Guides, trained to read hippo behaviour, keep a respectful distance while still allowing unusually close wildlife encounters.
Alongside the canoeing, walking and 4x4 safaris explore the valley's interior, known for its high density of leopards and for the immense sausage trees and umbrella acacias lining the river. The Lower Zambezi Valley remains one of the least-visited areas in southern Africa, with the number of lodges deliberately capped by Zambian authorities.
