Founded in 1524 on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is considered the oldest surviving colonial city on the American continent. Its vividly coloured façades, carefully restored after the fires and raids that marked its turbulent history, now make it one of Central America's best-preserved towns, best explored by horse-drawn carriage or on foot between convents and shaded squares.
Formed by the twin volcanoes Concepción, still active, and Maderas, extinct and cloaked in cloud forest, Ometepe is the world's largest volcanic island within a lake. Connected to the mainland only by ferry, it has kept a preserved rural way of life, where pre-Columbian petroglyphs and cacao farms sit alongside one of Central America's densest concentrations of biodiversity.
