San Juan del Sur, a former fishing village on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, has become a recognised surf destination thanks to steady thermal winds that guarantee favourable conditions almost year-round. The nearby beaches of Maderas and Hermosa, less crowded than the main bay, offer waves suited to both beginners and experienced surfers, set against dry hills plunging straight into the ocean.
Maderas beach, reached via an unpaved track, remains a favourite spot for beginner surfers thanks to steady, gentle waves, while Hermosa beach, more exposed, attracts experienced surfers seeking hollower breaks. Private lessons with local instructors allow rapid progress, regardless of starting level.
The horseshoe-shaped main bay of San Juan del Sur offers sunsets renowned throughout Central America, best observed from the beach bars set up directly on the sand. The statue of Christ of Mercy, perched on a hill overlooking the bay, offers a panoramic view reached after a short hike.
