Champagne Reef, on Dominica's south-west coast, owes its name to thousands of volcanic gas bubbles constantly rising from the seabed through geothermal fissures, creating the illusion of swimming in a giant glass of champagne and locally warming the water by several degrees. A few kilometres away, the twin Trafalgar Falls, fed by two distinct waterways tumbling side by side down the same rock face, rank among the most accessible and most photographed waterfalls on this volcanic island.
Champagne Reef takes its name from a unique geothermal phenomenon: underwater volcanic fissures constantly release streams of carbon dioxide bubbles that rise to the surface, creating a visual effect close to that of a glass of champagne and locally warming the water by several degrees compared to surrounding areas. This reef, located in the immediate vicinity of Soufrière Bay and the still-active underwater volcano feeding it, ranks among the most singular snorkelling sites in the entire Caribbean.
Trafalgar Falls, nicknamed "Mother and Father" by locals due to their unequal size, tumble side by side down the same volcanic rock face from distinct sources, one fed by a classic freshwater river and the other by a hot spring of volcanic origin. Accessible by a short trail from Trafalgar village, these falls rank among Dominica's most visited waterfalls, a popularity that has nonetheless never diminished the wild character of their surrounding forest setting.
