Kandy, with its lake and Temple of the Tooth, serves as the gateway to the central highlands. The train to Ella, doors open and windows without glass, crosses tea plantations that seem to cover every hill as far as the eye can see — one of Asia's most photographed rail journeys, and one of the few that lives up to every promise. The Nine Arches Bridge and a tea-factory tasting close this first, high-altitude chapter.
The descent to the south coast changes the pace entirely — a morning boat trip to watch blue whales, among the largest concentrations in the world at this time of year, then an excursion to Galle, a Dutch colonial fort with cobbled lanes and ramparts battered by the ocean. The trip closes on Mirissa's beaches, with no agenda beyond the sand and the sound of the waves.
