A road trip along one of the world's most beautiful coastal routes, between the Indian Ocean and the mountains. Tsitsikamma's indigenous forests, the Knysna lagoon, and — June to November — watching southern right whales from the cliffs of Hermanus.
The trip follows the Garden Route west, through Tsitsikamma National Park, where centuries-old indigenous forest drops straight into the ocean. Storms River's suspension bridge, thirty metres above the water, opens onto a dizzying view of the river mouth. Further on, the Knysna lagoon, guarded by its famous rocky "Heads," is best discovered by boat or by bike along its wooded shores.
The final stop is Hermanus, one of the best whale-watching spots in the world for southern right whales — visible from the cliffs without even boarding a boat. Between June and November, it's common to spot several right from the coastal path. The trip ends with the drive to Cape Town, along the vineyards of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley.
