Africa's third-largest lake, Lake Malawi holds more fish species than any other lake on Earth, nearly all of them endemic cichlids, the result of millions of years of evolution in isolation. Lake Malawi National Park, UNESCO-listed since 1984, protects its clearest waters, where snorkelling can be done just metres from shore, no diving gear required.
Long decimated by poaching, Liwonde National Park has undergone one of southern Africa's most dramatic turnarounds, with lions, cheetahs and black rhinos reintroduced since 2015. The Shire River, running the full length of the park, allows for a boat safari unlike any other, with hippos and crocodiles passing just metres from the boat.
