The Nyika Plateau, Malawi's highest point at over two thousand five hundred metres, reveals an unexpected landscape for southern Africa: rolling grassy hills stretching to the horizon, often compared to the English countryside, home to free-roaming Crawshay's zebra, roan antelope, and an exceptional concentration of wild orchids.
Nyika National Park, Malawi's oldest and largest, is explored on foot or on horseback — a rarity in southern Africa, made possible by the absence of dangerous predators on the plateau. Crawshay's zebra, an endemic subspecies with finer stripes than their lowland cousins, gather in herds several hundred strong, visible from the surrounding ridges.
The plateau shelters over two hundred species of wild orchid, the highest concentration in southern Africa, along with pockets of mist forest home to black-and-white colobus monkeys. The cool climate, sometimes near freezing at night in winter, contrasts with the heat of the rest of Malawi and allows full-day hikes without the usual constraint of African heat.
