Etosha National Park, one of Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuaries, built around a dried salt pan so vast it's visible from space. In the dry season, wildlife concentrates around a handful of waterholes, offering unusually dense sightings: elephants, lions, black rhinos, and gemsbok oryx, the emblem of the Namibian desert.
The trip begins in the eastern part of the park, around the Namutoni waterhole, a former German colonial fort turned camp. Morning and evening safaris allow herds to be observed along the salt pan, whose cracked white expanse stretches to the horizon in the dry season, creating mirages where distant animals seem to float.
A stay at Okaukuejo, whose floodlit night waterhole is an institution of Namibian safari: it's not unusual to see black rhinos, lions, and spotted hyenas take turns just metres from the viewing deck, without ever leaving camp. By day, the tracks around the camp are among the most wildlife-rich in the park.
