A road trip through one of the world's most spectacular deserts — the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the misty coast of Swakopmund, then Damaraland and its desert-adapted elephants.
The trip begins before dawn, to climb Dune 45 in the low light of early morning, when the red ridges stand out sharply against hollows still in shadow. Deadvlei, a white clay pan dotted with nine-hundred-year-old dead trees, remains one of the Namib Desert's most recognisable images. Sesriem Canyon, cut into sandstone by a river now dry most of the year, closes this first chapter before the road to the ocean.
Swakopmund, a town of German colonial architecture set between the dunes and the Atlantic, offers an unexpected contrast before the road to Damaraland. There, wildlife perfectly adapted to the aridity — including rare elephants capable of covering dozens of kilometres between two water points — coexists with rock engravings several millennia old, evidence of ancient human presence in one of the planet's most extreme environments.
