Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa's oldest and a true water tower for the Great Lakes region, is home to thirteen primate species including chimpanzee communities habituated to human presence. The park also offers East Africa's only canopy suspension bridge, forty metres above the forest floor.
The trek begins before dawn to reach the chimpanzee community where it spent the night, before the group disperses into the canopy for the day. Unlike gorillas, chimpanzees move quickly and noisily through the trees, making every encounter different — sometimes an hour's walk is enough, sometimes it takes the whole day.
Nyungwe's canopy walkway, made up of three platforms linked by metal footbridges, offers a rare perspective on the canopy from forty metres up, with views reaching as far as the Virunga volcanoes on a clear day. The quieter waterfall trail winds through primary forest dotted with waterfalls and wild orchids.
