Trekking permits are capped at a small number of visitors per day, per gorilla family, and led by rangers who have tracked these groups for years and know each individual by name. The walk through the bamboo forest can take anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours depending on the group's position that day — but once the family is located, the hour spent observing a silverback from just metres away remains, for most travellers, the most intense nature experience of their lives.
Between treks, Rwanda reveals itself through terraced hillsides, still-quiet volcanic lakes and a capital that has become, in a single generation, one of the continent's safest and cleanest cities. The road between Kigali and Musanze crosses dense rural countryside dotted with artisan cooperatives, where the pace remains resolutely local despite the growing number of visitors drawn by the gorillas.
