Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes its name from four permanent pools left by an old bend of the Zambezi, which attract an exceptional concentration of elephants, buffalo, and wild dogs in the dry season. It's one of the rare African parks where unguided walking remains permitted — a human-scale experience amid the region's big game.
The canoe trip along Mana Pools' banks glides between sandbanks and tall albida trees, where elephants sometimes rear up on their hind legs to reach the highest foliage, a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere on the continent. The flat, open banks offer unusually clear sightlines onto the wildlife coming down to drink throughout the day.
Mana Pools shelters one of the best-studied wild dog populations in Africa, a highly social and endangered predator that hunts in organised packs. The possibility of walking freely in certain zones of the park, a regulation unique in southern Africa, allows for an immersion in the rhythm of the bush rarely matched elsewhere, between fresh tracks and baboon alarm calls signalling a nearby predator.
