A journey between Beijing, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall snaking along mountain ridgelines, and Xi'an, the ancient imperial capital home to the eight thousand terracotta soldiers of China's first emperor.
Built and rebuilt over more than two thousand years by various dynasties to guard against invasions from the north, the Great Wall today stretches over twenty thousand kilometres, much of it in ruins or vanished entirely. The Mutianyu section, restored but noticeably quieter than Badaling, lets visitors walk the ramparts as watchtowers unfold one after another along wooded ridgelines, a panorama that shifts with the season and time of day.
In 1974, farmers digging a well near Xi'an stumbled by chance upon fragments of statues that would go on to reveal one of the greatest archaeological sites of the 20th century — over eight thousand life-size soldiers, horses and chariots, each with a different face, buried over two thousand years ago to protect China's first emperor's tomb in the afterlife. Only a fraction of the site has been excavated to date, with the main tomb deliberately left sealed.
