A journey through the great Silk Road cities — Samarkand's monumental Registan, Bukhara's terracotta lanes and the fortified city of Khiva, unchanged for centuries.
A public square and intellectual centre of Samarkand since the 15th century, the Registan brings together three monumental madrasas covered in blue and turquoise ceramic mosaics, each built a century apart. The carefully restored ensemble remains one of the high points of Timurid architecture and the most recognisable visual symbol of Uzbekistan, particularly striking an hour before sunset.
Less monumental than Samarkand but more authentically preserved, Bukhara retains an entire lived-in historic centre, where merchants and artisans still occupy the same stalls as their ancestors. Khiva, further into the Kyzylkum desert, takes this preservation to the extreme: its walled city of Itchan Kala forms a complete 18th- and 19th-century urban ensemble, UNESCO-listed, explored entirely on foot behind its earthen ramparts.
