The fifth-largest desert in the world, the Gobi sees extreme temperature swings between summer and winter, but is best known for its palaeontological discoveries. It was at the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag that the very first fossilised dinosaur eggs ever found were uncovered in 1923 — a find that continues to draw scientific expeditions from around the world to this remote region.
Nearly a third of Mongolia's population still lives a semi-nomadic lifestyle, moving several times a year with their herds according to the seasons. Welcoming a visitor into a ger, offering fermented milk and sharing a meal is part of an ancestral code of hospitality, passed down through generations long before tourism arrived — a tradition that remains at the heart of contemporary Mongolian identity.
