A journey in two movements: Bangkok's sacred bustle, its temples and floating markets, then the complete stillness of a car-free island off the Andaman Sea. In between, the ruins of the old royal capital, Ayutthaya.

Bangkok, the sacred bustle

The trip begins on the banks of the Chao Phraya river, at a boutique hotel steps from Chinatown's buzzing lanes. The first days follow a deliberately early rhythm: Wat Arun before the heat and crowds, a longtail boat ride through the Thonburi canals past stilt houses, then a day trip to Ayutthaya, the old royal capital where red-brick stupas still stand among the trees. Chatuchak Market, an immense maze of stalls, closes this first chapter before the flight south.

Koh Yao Noi, the silence of the Andaman Sea

The change of pace is immediate: on this car-free island, only scooters and bicycles move between the rice paddies and fishing villages. Phang Nga Bay, its limestone karsts rising from turquoise water, is best explored by longtail boat, with a snorkelling stop and a seafood lunch on a deserted sandbank. The final days have no fixed plan — a Thai cooking class, a massage facing the sea, or simply the sand, whichever the moment calls for.
