A journey between Port Vila, a capital blending Melanesian and French influences, and Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible volcanoes, in the archipelago where the vine jump, ancestor of bungee jumping, was born.
In continuous activity for at least eight hundred years, Mount Yasur remains one of the few volcanoes on Earth where it's possible to approach the crater rim in relative safety, to watch its strombolian explosions throwing glowing lava every few minutes. Early European navigators already used it as a natural lighthouse, visible for kilometres out at sea on a clear night.
On Pentecost Island, off the usual route, village men jump each year from a thirty-metre wooden tower, their ankles bound with vines carefully calculated to stop their fall just centimetres from the ground. This fertility ritual, practised long before the invention of modern bungee jumping, which drew direct inspiration from it, remains one of the most spectacular traditions in the South Pacific.
