The Mamanuca archipelago counts around twenty islands, most of them deserted, scattered across a turquoise lagoon less than an hour by boat from Nadi. An excursion to a completely deserted islet, with no agenda beyond a tropical fruit picnic, remains one of the archipelago's most sought-after experiences — the Fijian version of the postcard desert island, with no artifice.
The waters around the Mamanuca are among the best preserved in the South Pacific — turtles, multicoloured fish and largely intact coral, accessible both by diving and simple snorkelling from the beach. A visit to a traditional Fijian village, with its kava ceremony and songs passed down through generations, rounds out the stay with a human dimension rarely found elsewhere in the Pacific.
