Ringing New Caledonia over more than fifteen hundred kilometres, the New Caledonian reef forms the world's largest enclosed lagoon, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for its exceptional biodiversity. This coral barrier, the second longest after Australia's, holds a record concentration of endemic marine species, largely preserved thanks to the archipelago's geographic isolation.
Named thus by navigator James Cook in 1774 for the columnar pines bristling along its coastline, Isle of Pines owes its reputation to bays of rare turquoise clarity, framed by limestone cliffs and dazzling white sand. The Oro Natural Pool, accessible only by traditional outrigger canoe through the mangrove, remains one of the most photographed sites in the entire South Pacific.
