Buda and Pest, long two separate cities divided by the Danube, only merged in 1873, forming the capital we know today. Buda, on the hilly bank, holds the royal castle and historic districts, while Pest, flat and lively, is home to the Parliament, grand boulevards and nightlife — a contrast that still shapes the city more than a hundred and fifty years after their union.
Budapest sits atop more than a hundred thermal springs, exploited since Roman times and developed on a grand scale under Ottoman occupation and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Széchenyi Baths, built in the early 20th century in a flamboyant Neo-Baroque style, sum up this tradition unique in Europe — as much a social ritual as a therapeutic practice, where chess players and families still mingle today in the outdoor pools.
