Built by successive European powers from the 15th century onward, the forts along Ghana's coast served as the last points of passage for millions of Africans deported to the Americas. Now UNESCO-listed, Cape Coast and Elmina are visited with local guides who lay out, dungeon by dungeon, the scale of this history — a stop as essential as it is moving on any trip to Ghana.
Seven suspended walkways link the treetops of Kakum's rainforest, offering a rare vantage point over one of West Africa's last great primary forests, home to forest elephants and more than two hundred and fifty bird species. The walk, thirty metres up, is best done early morning, while mist still lingers between the branches and the forest wakes to the calls of colobus monkeys.
