A side of Ghana unknown to travellers who stop only on the coast: Mole National Park, the country's largest game reserve, where elephants are sometimes encountered on foot, and Larabanga Mosque, one of West Africa's oldest examples of mud-built Sudano-Sahelian architecture.

Mole National Park

Mole National Park, Ghana's largest protected area, is partly explored on foot, accompanied by an armed ranger — one of the few reserves in West Africa where this remains possible. Elephants, kob antelope, and occasionally lions are encountered along the river, with an unobstructed view from the lodge terrace, built into the hillside directly above a waterhole frequented by wildlife.

Larabanga and Tamale

A few kilometres from the park, the village of Larabanga is home to Ghana's oldest mosque, an 18th-century mud-and-wood building in the Sudano-Sahelian style, with its distinctive pointed buttresses. A final stop in Tamale, a lively regional capital, for an immersion in a local market far from the tourist circuits of the south.
