Far from the Indian Ocean beaches, Gorongosa National Park embodies one of Africa's most ambitious ecological restoration projects: after losing more than 90% of its wildlife during the Mozambican civil war, the park has seen elephants, lions, and wild dogs reintroduced, across a landscape of savannah, forest, and lake among the most diverse on the continent.
The heart of the park is organised around Lake Urema, whose shores attract hippos, crocodiles, and one of southern Africa's highest concentrations of waterbirds. 4x4 safaris cross the central floodplain, where buffalo and antelope have rebuilt herds several hundred strong since the restoration programme launched in 2004.
An excursion to the foothills of Mount Gorongosa, whose rainforest shelters endemic species only recently discovered by science. The conservation programme closely involves neighbouring communities, with visits to agricultural and educational projects funded by tourism revenue — a dimension rarely this visible in an African park.
