A national park since 1971, the Bazaruto Archipelago remains one of the least crowded destinations in the entire Indian Ocean, despite a beauty that rivals the best-known atolls of South East Asia. The archipelago's five islands, formed by sand carried down by the Save River, are home to one of the last viable populations of dugongs — herbivorous marine mammals that have become rare across the rest of the African continent.
The sand dunes of Benguerra, rising over a hundred metres, create a striking contrast with the turquoise lagoon that surrounds them — a landscape that evokes a coastal desert more than the classic image of a tropical island. The walk to the summit, reachable in under an hour, offers a panoramic view over the whole archipelago and the dhows sailing in the distance, a scene practically unchanged for generations.
