Separated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia, Casamance forms a region apart, nicknamed "green Africa" for its lush landscapes of mangroves, rice paddies, and palm groves, worlds away from the Senegalese Sahel. Diola country, with its traditional impluvium huts and still-living animist ceremonies, offers one of the most authentic faces of West Africa.
An exploration by traditional pirogue of the bolongs, brackish-water channels winding through one of West Africa's largest mangrove forests. The fishing villages that line them live by the rhythm of the tides, oysters harvested directly from the mangrove roots.
A visit to Diola villages built around impluvium huts, a unique circular architecture that collects rainwater at its centre. Diola society, which has remained largely animist despite the influence of Islam and Christianity, still holds ritual ceremonies around sacred groves today, access to which remains reserved for the initiated.
